New Subway Diagram

wayfinding design + development for New York City MTA
In 2022 and 2023, I had the privilege of working closely on the MTA’s mapping pilot program, with a focus on redrawing and expanding on the new subway diagram (based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 design).

After a years-long pilot program in stations across the city along with much internal review and market research, this diagram has since become the official New York City Subway Map, first entering subway cars in the spring of 2025. While wayfinding tools like this are constantly being changed and expanded upon, I am incredibly proud that my work is the basis for a new era of NYC wayfinding tools.

I contributed to the development of a consistent visual language for weekend service change assets which were utilized twice-monthly on digital screens, social media, in emails, as well as on printed foldable handouts distributed throughout the system.
I also created a comprehensive presentation deck for internal circulation detailing the visual language and methodology behind the redesign. These are in-depth comparisons of the Hertz Map (1979-2025) with the new diagram, as well as older versions of the diagram with new systems and solutions that I developed myself.
